Don’t let the strange name put you off! Baccarat, pronounced with a silent t, is actually a very simply live casino game that’s easy to understand. If poker is just too complex for you, or you find that roulette gives you too much choice when it comes to making bets, baccarat might be a game better suited to your tastes. Find out how to play it here.
What is Live Baccarat?
Baccarat is primarily a card game that you place bets on. The premise is very simple, like Blackjack you are aiming to get closest to a specific number. The hand with the closest number to the target wins. Except with Baccarat, there’s only 2 hands: the player’s and the bank’s. There is only ever 1 hand for the players, regardless of how many people are playing.
You can place 3 different bets – that the player’s hand is closest to 9, that the bank’s hand is closest to 9, or that they will tie.
It really is that simple! You can tell that it converts very well into an online casino game, as you can have hundreds of players all betting with just the 2 hands present on the table. Some live dealer baccarat games will live stream a table where the baccarat is physically being played, while others may be a computer simulation.
How to Play Baccarat Online
The winning hand is the one closest to 9, so you need to make your bet on either the player’s hand, banker’s hand of a draw. You need to remember that:
- Ace cards count as 1
- 10s, jacks, queens and kings count as 0
When a hand goes over 9, the digits are reduced so that it’s always between 2 and 9. So, if the hand was 8+3+7, the total would be 18, which would then reduced to just 8.
There can be up to 8 52 card decks that are used to play baccarat and you need to know a few other rules to play successfully too.
You wager before any cards a dealt out into any hand.
The players hand is dealt first. If the total is less than 5, they can “hit” just like with blackjack to receive another card.
Once the player stands, the banks cards are revealed. The Banker will hit if his total is 0, 1, 2 or 3. Luckily for you, there are dealers who know the game inside out and will be dealing and deciding to hit for both the player and bank hands. All you need to do is place your bets!
The player and banker hands have very nearly the same odds as winning – but as the banker reveals last, he does have a very slight edge. If you bet that they will tie, you could win a massive amount… but the chances are very slim.
Baccarat is a lot of fun, mostly because it comes down to luck and you really don’t have to know much about the rules to play. This makes it ideal for beginners.
If you want to take baccarat more seriously, you will want to develop a more professional strategy of playing. But, as baccarat is really down to even chances (much the same as flipping a coin) there’s not much you can do. Ensuring that you stay focused and make the right bets however, will aid you when you play. You also need to know when to walk away from the table, put down your phone or close the web browser.
Baccarat is a good game to play when you want to relax, spend some money and enjoy yourself. If you are looking for a more complex game that requires mastering some skill, take a look at our guide to playing poker.
